Let apps show me personalized ads by using my advertising ID

The DWORD value `0` disables the Windows advertising ID for the affected user profile.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AdvertisingInfo\Enabled

The DWORD value 0 disables the Windows advertising ID for the affected user profile. Windows then stops providing a usable identifier to apps that support the Windows advertising ID. The AdvertisingManager.AdvertisingId property returns an empty string when the feature is disabled.

When the feature is enabled, all supporting apps for the same user on that device receive the same advertising ID. App providers and advertising networks can use that shared identifier to associate app activity with personalized advertising or other personalized app experiences.

Notes

Security

Disabling the identifier limits the ability of Windows apps and their associated advertising networks to correlate activity through the shared Windows advertising ID.

It does not prevent every form of personalized advertising or tracking. Website cookies, provider-specific identifiers, and other advertising methods used by Microsoft or third parties are outside the scope of this value.

Possible side effects

Disabling the advertising ID does not necessarily reduce the number of ads displayed. Ads in affected apps may instead become less relevant or less closely matched to app usage.

If the advertising ID is enabled again later, Windows generates a new identifier rather than reusing the previous one.

Notes

This is a per-user setting for the associated Windows profile. It is distinct from the computer-scoped Turn off the advertising ID Group Policy and its policy value at HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\AdvertisingInfo\DisabledByGroupPolicy.

Microsoft documents the behavior of the disabled advertising ID feature and its programming interface. However, the linked Microsoft pages do not currently publish this exact HKCU mapping as a registry reference.
