HKU\.DEFAULT\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ContentDeliveryManager\SoftLandingEnabled
The SoftLandingEnabled DWORD value, when set to 0, is intended to suppress the Windows Tips experience known as “soft landing.” This experience presents suggestions that introduce users to Windows features.
This value is a per-profile Content Delivery Manager preference, not a documented Group Policy value. Microsoft documents the associated feature as “Windows Tips / soft landing,” but does not publish an authoritative reference for this particular registry value.
Notes
Notes
HKU\.DEFAULT is neither the registry hive of the signed-in user nor the profile template stored in C:\Users\Default\NTUSER.DAT. Consequently, placing the value at the specified path does not by itself disable Windows Tips for existing accounts or accounts created later. An equivalent preference for an interactive user resides in that user’s own hive under HKEY_USERS.
The officially documented Do not show Windows tips policy uses a different key and value: Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CloudContent\DisableSoftLanding. Its scope and enforcement characteristics must not be attributed to SoftLandingEnabled.
Windows treats the welcome experience shown after updates or at later sign-ins as a separate feature. Microsoft documents that control as Turn off the Windows Welcome Experience. Therefore, SoftLandingEnabled=0 should not be considered a reliable way to disable every post-OOBE or Windows welcome screen.
