Disable Microsoft Office client telemetry

The per-user `DisableTelemetry` value is created as a `DWORD` with value data `1` and is intended to suppress Microsoft Office client telemetry.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Common\ClientTelemetry\DisableTelemetry

The per-user DisableTelemetry value is created as a DWORD with value data 1 and is intended to suppress Microsoft Office client telemetry. Microsoft does not publish a supported definition for this exact registry path and value, however. It therefore cannot be established reliably which Office releases honor it or which telemetry components they disable.

This value is not equivalent to Microsoft's documented Configure the level of client software diagnostic data sent by Office to Microsoft policy. That policy uses the SendTelemetry value under HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\Common\ClientTelemetry.

Notes

Security

Because DisableTelemetry at the specified path is undocumented, its presence does not demonstrate that Office has stopped transmitting diagnostic or usage data. If an Office release does not recognize the value, the privacy and diagnostic-data controls effective through other settings continue to apply.

The value also has no documented effect on required service data or traffic generated by connected experiences. Microsoft states that required service data can still be sent even when the official diagnostic-data policy is set to “Neither.”

Notes

This is an individual value in a regular per-user Office registry branch, not a Microsoft-documented Group Policy setting. Microsoft provides no official display name, supported product scope, or version applicability for it.

Office diagnostic data is also distinct from the inventory, usage, and health information formerly collected for Office Telemetry Dashboard. Telemetry Dashboard settings and controls for Office diagnostic data sent to Microsoft govern separate components.
