The ActivationFilterOverride DWORD value controls an exception to the Office COM kill bit for Macromedia Flash Factory Object, identified by CLSID {D27CDB70-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000}.
A value of 0 does not enable this exception. When the COM object is blocked by the Office kill-bit list or by Compatibility Flags, the complete activation block therefore remains in effect. The object cannot be loaded in an affected Office application's process, whether through an object embedded in or linked from a document or through another activation path.
This CLSID represents one of the two Flash ActiveX objects that Microsoft lists among the controls blocked from activation by default.
Notes
Security
This setting preserves the broader activation block for the Flash COM object. It prevents the object from being loaded through document content, OLE links, add-ins, or other activation mechanisms within the Office process.
In contrast, a value of 1 would limit the kill-bit behavior to linking and embedding scenarios, allowing other in-process activation paths. Microsoft cautions that removing or weakening a COM kill bit can introduce security vulnerabilities.
Possible side effects
Office documents, add-ins, or other Office functionality that depends on this specific Flash object cannot load it. Associated Flash content or dependent features may consequently fail to work.
Notes
The value uses the REG_DWORD type. It has an effect only when an Office COM kill bit applies to the CLSID. Microsoft identifies Macromedia Flash Factory Object as an object blocked from activation by default.
The WOW6432Node registry location applies to 32-bit Office running on 64-bit Windows. This is a computer-wide HKLM setting for the Office 16.0 product line.
