Disable Windows Spotlight on lock screen

Setup Foundry sets this `DWORD` registry value to `1` with the intention of disabling Windows spotlight on the lock screen.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CloudContent\DisableWindowsSpotlightOnLockScreen

Setup Foundry sets this DWORD registry value to 1 with the intention of disabling Windows spotlight on the lock screen. However, Microsoft does not document this specific value under HKLM as a supported policy mapping. Its effect on Windows spotlight therefore cannot be confirmed from official Microsoft documentation.

Microsoft’s documented policy for this purpose is “Configure Windows spotlight on lock screen.” It is a user-scoped policy backed by the ConfigureWindowsSpotlight value under Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CloudContent. When that documented policy is disabled, Windows spotlight is no longer available as the lock-screen provider. Windows displays the default lock-screen image or another permitted image instead of the daily images supplied by Microsoft.

Notes

Notes

The machine-wide DisableWindowsSpotlightOnLockScreen value described here is not the same setting as the documented user-scoped ConfigureWindowsSpotlight policy.

In particular, official documentation does not establish that DisableWindowsSpotlightOnLockScreen=1 prevents users from selecting Windows spotlight, removes cached content, or disables other Windows spotlight features such as tips, suggestions, and organizational messages.
