Before Windows Setup runs, it measures the computer, picks the target disk and prepares it. You confirm once that the computer is erased and reinstalled; everything else is decided by the measurement, not by chance.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"steps\">Steps\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Col>\n\u003Cli>Boot the target computer from the drive. In the firmware boot menu, choose the entry “UEFI:” followed by the drive's name. An entry without “UEFI” no longer starts the drive, because Windows 11 requires UEFI mode. If there is no UEFI entry, switch the firmware to UEFI boot and turn off Legacy or CSM mode.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>Read the measurement line in the disk section of the card. It looks like “Detected: UEFI · target: disk 1 (SATA, 476 GB) · TPM 2.0 · Secure Boot on · RAM 16 GB”. If Windows Setup would refuse a check, that is stated after it.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>Enter the computer name or let it be assigned from the medium's naming scheme.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>Check the target. It is the measured disk: internal, never the drive, the one with the lowest number if there are several. A sentence below the list says that the target was measured.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>Confirm with “Erase everything and install”.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>Wait. The assistant prepares the target disk and starts Windows Setup.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Fol>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"result\">Result\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>The target disk is GPT and holds four partitions in the Microsoft layout: EFI with 100 MB, MSR with 16 MB, Windows, and a recovery partition of 1 GB at the end. Windows Setup installs into the Windows partition and no longer asks for a target.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Afterwards the drive holds the file \u003Ccode>install_assist_befund.txt\u003C\u002Fcode> with the measurements, the chosen target disk, date, program version and the result of partitioning. The partitioning output is in \u003Ccode>install_assist_partitionierung.log\u003C\u002Fcode> next to it. Which path ran, the assistant's own preparation or the fallback to Windows Setup, is in the report file in the line \u003Ccode>Weg:\u003C\u002Fcode>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"notes\">Notes\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cul>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Which disk becomes the target:\u003C\u002Fstrong> an internal disk, not removable, not attached over USB, not the drive, readable and at least 64 GB. An internal disk below 64 GB is skipped; it does not become the target. If several qualify, the assistant takes the one with the lowest number. If there is none, it stops and erases nothing. USB disks and the drive itself are never erased.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Boot mode first:\u003C\u002Fstrong> Started in BIOS mode, the assistant stops before it touches any disk. Windows 11 is installed in UEFI mode only. If the boot mode cannot be determined, nothing is erased either.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>The measurement line is a hint, not a workaround.\u003C\u002Fstrong> If it says Windows Setup would refuse a check, such as TPM or Secure Boot, the assistant does not change that. Installation runs as Windows Setup allows.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>The report file contains no identifiers:\u003C\u002Fstrong> no serial numbers, no hardware or partition identifiers, no MAC addresses, no computer or model name. It is never part of an error report. It is for you, and for support if you include it.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>For professionals:\u003C\u002Fstrong> If Windows Setup should prepare the disk itself as before, the unattended file takes \u003Ccode>partitionierung = setup\u003C\u002Fcode>. The boot mode is still checked first.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"if-it-does-not-work\">If it does not work\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cul>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>“The computer started in BIOS mode. Restart it and select the USB drive’s UEFI entry in the boot menu.”\u003C\u002Fstrong> The computer booted the drive in BIOS or Legacy mode. Restart, open the firmware boot menu and choose the entry that begins with “UEFI”. If the firmware offers no UEFI entry, turn off Legacy or CSM mode in the firmware settings.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>“The boot mode (UEFI or BIOS) could not be determined. Nothing will be erased.”\u003C\u002Fstrong> Restart the computer and choose the UEFI entry explicitly.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>“No internal disk was found as the target. USB disks and the installation drive itself are never erased.”\u003C\u002Fstrong> The computer has no internal disk, the disk is not connected, or it is smaller than 64 GB. Check the installation. A disk over USB is never taken as the target.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>“Our own partitioning failed. Windows Setup will partition disk …”\u003C\u002Fstrong> This is not an abort. The assistant could not prepare the target disk itself and hands that work back to Windows Setup, which prepares the named disk from the answer file. Installation continues. This fallback exists only when the assistant's own preparation failed. If the assistant refused the disk, found no target, or the computer was started in BIOS mode, it stops and erases nothing.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>"Partitioning failed."\u003C\u002Fstrong> The target disk could not be prepared, and the fallback to Windows Setup was not possible either.
